Northwind Guided Grouse and Woodcock Hunts

Our goal to provide our clients with the best possible upland hunt. What sets us apart from other guide services is that this is our full time job. Our business is centered year around on grouse and woodcock. No other guide service in Northern Wisconsin can say this. Other guides are part time. Some live elsewhere and come to the Northwoods in the peak of the fall to guide then return where ever they came from. In the spring we do our own drumming counts survey with over 50 drumming sites located.

During the summer we also conduct our own brood surveys for the areas that we hunt. Due to the extensive amount of mapping of aspen clear-cuts we do as part of our business, we know where the cuts are located that are “off the beaten path” (of course you won’t find these cuts marked on the maps we sell). We are constantly updating our aspen stand inventory records for new places to hunt in the four county region around where we live. Our dogs are highly trained, close working guide dogs and in 2009 our three main dogs had over 3600 points on grouse and woodcock with over 75% of the points on grouse alone. When fall comes we work hard to get our clients into areas that few others have been. However, if you are looking for that stroll down a beautiful forested trail with dogs’ quartering back and forth in front of you we can provide that as well. For us the grouse season does not end at the end of hunting season, but continues all year round in order to provide you, our client with the best hunt possible.

Ann Jandernoa is owner of Northwind Enterprises, graduate Forester, author of the Northwind Grouse Habitat Maps, creator and primary instructor of the Northwind Grouse Clinic program, Seminars, DVDs, and experienced upland bird hunting guide. Ann does her "homework." Starting in early Spring and continuing through early November, Ann spends a good deal of time scouting prime habitat, for her clients. Ann is known for taking her clients well off the beaten path, through the thickest cover, into the "back" of the habitat where there has been little or no hunting pressure. If you want to hunt at a leisurely pace, sticking primarily to the trails, Ann is not the guide for you (although she will slow down if you ask her nicely). On the other hand, if you want a guide who knows the habitat, hunts hard, and will do her best to find birds, then Ann is your guide.

Skip Souther is a professional bird dog trainer. Skip's specialty is "trail hunts" and working with client's who are hunting over their young dogs for the first time. Skip subscribes to the belief that grouse and woodcock hunting is more about working with the dogs and watching them work for you, than shooting birds. If you are not inclined to "beat the brush" and "go all day" (although he will if you want), or if you want some help in getting your young dog started off on the right foot, then Skip is your guide.
If you are looking for an exceptional experience in the woods or a guided hunt we will provide you, and your own business clients, with the type of hunt you are looking for. We are the only guides in our area who offer full day, half day, single party, and multiple party hunts. A testimony to our hard work throughout the year is can be seen in our clients who are happy and return year after year.

Good Morning Skip and Ann, How do I say thank you….I still can’t believe the two days that I spent with Ann hunting grouse and woodcock in October 2007. It was two perfect days that I will remember forever. The tile of my hunting journal is “Land, Guns, Dogs, and Birds…liberally stolen from John Taylor’s book about Eastern upland bird hunting. The order seems appropriate. Ann had worked hard to find a cover/cut that had every mix of habitat that grouse need to thrive. I would have never found this area of grouse heaven on my own, but Ann did. The summer spent at the skeet range (4000 rounds) paid off with better shooting on my part. A beautiful side-by-side 20 gauge made the experience more enjoyable. Watching a well-trained grouse dog point a jittery and elusive quarry is an examination of the best in genetics and training at work. Finally grouse and woodcock are beautiful wild birds that challenge the best of us. They live where it is remote and beautiful. The shooting is difficult, but possible. We count the number of flushes because it represents opportunities. The two days we hunted we had LOTS of opportunities. A veteran grouse hunter wouldn’t believe the numbers. Habitat, luck, practice, knowledge, and hard work came together and it was sweet. I will savor it forever." Jan Close, Winthrop NY P.S. Can I book for three days next year???
Ann - Thank you again for your assistance and guidance this past Saturday. The combination of clinic and guided hunt with both your dog and mine working together was extremely helpful and also a really enjoyable time. Using what I learned, in cooperation with one of your map books, the rest of my weekend hunt produced a record number of points and flushes, and a great Grouse dinner to boot. Thank you again for all of your assistance. I will highly recommend your services to anyone looking for a guide or just how to become a better Grouse hunter. Sincerely, Ed Muncie
Dear Ann,
Thanks again for a terrific week of hunting and learning. This was my best hunting trip ever, particularly because of your willingness to share freely your considerable knowledge. I look forward to seeing you and Skip [next year] Sincercely Patrick O’Donnel, Concord NH, November 17, 2009
Skip,
Every November hunt is a great hunt for us with you, great dogs, great guides, great areas to hunt. This past hunt had some really great moments (whether we feathered birds or not) with the dog on point in classic cover. It is too bad you didn't get a video, not because we can shoot, but because it would have been a great demonstration of what you and Ann can offer to the intrepid grouse hunter...the right spots (if you don't mind walking through a hells broth of cover for 1/2 an hour to get there), good dogs, good direction from the guides.
I am planning on next year, hopefully 2 hunts, but definitely 1, just need to see where Warren's college quest brings him (I hope it's not Colorado), so keep me in the loop if your bookings begin to max out quickly.
Hope you and Ann (and the dogs of course) have a good Thanksgiving.
Best, Warren Clohisy, Arlington Heights, IL, November 21, 2009
